The "shear pin" sounds most likely. Remove the "split pin" and the nut.
Remove the prop and look at the FWD face. You should find a "sheared" brass
pin which can be removed from the prop shaft with a small pin punch. Once
you see it with the prop removed you will understand it's purpose.
