I would make damned sure what the law is about shooting one.
Unfortunately, around DC they don't have much of a sense of humor
about shooting anything.
Pepper spray might be a better choice. A snoot full of that would make
a coyote think about chasing something else.
Get a real gun store spray, not one of those purse dongles.

We had a guy here go to jail for shooting a bear in his yard.

I suppose it was his fault for telling someone. I think that bear
would be on the bottom of the gulf chained to a half dozen cinder
blocks if I shot it.

You're probably right. When discussing the course of action with my neighbor, his comment was,
"Someone will sue you, even if it's just for making too much noise." I'd probably have to show teeth
marks on my pets or myself after the cops came. Oh well.
