What the scooter guy didn't have was common sense. The area where he was
assaulted was "iffy" 50 years ago, when I walked along that part of
Goffe Street on occasion from my high school to downtown New Haven. I
doubt if it has become "gentrified." If I were testing a scooter from a
shop on Whalley Avenue, as he was, I would have stayed on Whalley or
taken a cut through street to another part of town.

When I visit New Haven, there are certain areas I avoid, as there are
certain areas in many cities I would avoid.

In your part of the country, of course, the worry is running into the
Deliverance boys, eh?
