Way back when, I used to walk sometimes from my high school, whose
property bordered on Goffe Street, to downtown New Haven. That stretch
of Goffe was in transition way back then. I had an afterschool job one
semester at a gas station at the intersection of Whalley Avenue, Goffe
Street, and Dixwell Avenue.
Whalley and Goffe are named after two of the three so-called regicide
judges who fled England and came to New Haven in the 17th Century,
anticipating prosecution under King Charles II for their connection to
the execution of his father Charles I. They hid in a rock cave on West
Rock, and that cave is an historical landmark called Judges Cave.
