They call em referbs because it would be too embarrassing to say they
work fine but the customers didn't want them for whatever reason.
They also have the old "turn up the brightness on the operator" call

Apple's refurbed products, in most instances, are impossible to tell
from "brand new" ones. In the case of the iPhones, the front glass is
not re-used and typically the metal case, if it shows any wear, is not
re-used either. Parts inside the case are recycled and the phones get a
new battery. If you buy a refurbed unit, you get the warranty and the
decide is eligible for you to buy two or three years of AppleCare, an
extended usually no questions asked replacement policy.
