Gov. Martin O'Malley will sign legislation Thursday morning abolishing
capital punishment in Maryland -- a goal of his since he took office in
2007.
The governor's approval will make Maryland the 18th state to repeal the
death penalty. A throng of capital punshment opponents -- representing
such groups as the NAACP and the Catholic church -- is expected to turn
out for the bill-signing ceremony at the State House in Annapolis.
On Wednesday night the Archdiocese of Baltimore announced plans to
illuminate the Basilica of the Assumption from dusk Thursday through
dawn Friday to celebrate repeal.
This does beg the question, what do you do to an inmate doing triple
life who kills a corrections officer. (or escapes and continues his
life of crime)
Once someone has crossed the "life" threshold, they have nothing more
to lose and that is a fairly low bar these days. You can be looking at
life for a string of non-violent drug crimes.
When you have a guy like the Boston bomber, taking the death penalty
off the table may be the only chip they have to get him talking.
At least Planned Parenthood is still open.
