Does it matter that Jason Collins says he is gay?

Why should I care if Washington Wizards basketball player Jason Collins

Collins is good enough to play in the NBA, why should anyone give a damn
about his sexual preference?
It didn't make any difference to me when I read that Leonardo da Vinci
might have been gay, and he was a guy who really mattered.
I do understand why announcing his preference might matter to Collins,
but really, why does anyone else care? Yet, it seems that many people do.
D'oh.
Harry, concerning world events involving a trigger happy nutcase in
North Korea, and the possibility of a threat of war with Syria being
proprietary issues, why would you think that some ball players sexual
orientation would be worthy mention?
That was my point, indirectly, tim. Collins is all over the news and
many "prominent" individuals are commenting on his "coming out," and,
not being much of a sports fan, I don't know why. The question remains,
why does anyone care?
I don't see us going to war with Syria. And North Korea has been ruled
by "nutcases" for many decades, all of whom have been trigger happy. My
guess is that the Chinese are talking to their puppet and telling him to
cool it. I don't buy into "neocon-ism," and I suspect most Americans are
against our getting into shooting wars with either country. Well, all
except Lindsay Graham and John McCain.
