thinking of corrosion that forms on the aluminium

FWIW, The white powder associated with (leaking/venting) NiCds is
usually potassium hydroxide, a rather caustic material. A chemical
"cousin" is soduim hydroxide (lye). Don't ingest or get in eyes,
needless to say...
