My college of choice? What was your college of choice?

My parents college of choice was BYU, I was scouted by a coach on the
volley ball team but decided not to go.. so? What does that have to do
with weather your parents were successful in helping you reach your
goals...

The word you want is "whether," not "weather." Had you gotten an
education, you might have known the difference between the two words.

My parents steered me towards being able to think for myself and thus
stressed reading, writing, science, music, art, and having fun. My goal
back then was to get a good education, not a job. It wasn't until my
third year of college that I had what might be called a "career" goal of
becoming a professional writer. Funny thing is, the spring of my junior
year, when I was hired by the Kansas City Star to start working that
summer, I was one of three new reporters hired, and there were more than
a thousand applicants from all around the country. I know that, because
the day the managing editor hired me, he took me to the board room and
showed me the enormous stacks of resumes, and said the count was more
than a thousand.

Hell, I never even gave him a resume. I didn't have one back then. He
hired me the night before at a journalism society party at which
everyone got smashed. Wasn't until a year later that I learned he had
"scouted" me at the party at the suggestion of one of my professors, who
was an adviser to the newspaper's editorial board.

So, how did your parents help you reach your goals?
