My guess is that "Earl," if he ever had his hands on a scoped rifle,
pointed it towards himself when he fired. It would explain his obvious
brain damage.

The rifle, btw, is a Thompson Center R-55. Mine has a stainless barrel
and receiver. There are a number R-55 models, including a couple with
wood stock.
