I just responded to BAR with a suggestion:

There seems to be one common denominator that these deranged people
exhibit. They all seem to be looking for their day in the spotlight ...
to be noticed and recognized. Most commit suicide knowing that their
name and existence will become known to the nation.
It's not a difficult stretch to conclude that the recognition and
notoriety that one person gets leads to other unstable people doing
similar things.

So, let's stop publicizing their names and the details of their
actions, problems and lives in the media. Stop giving them the
attention that motivated them to begin with. Having cable news networks
commit 5 days of non-stop coverage, analysis, "expert" reports and
investigation does nothing but encourage the next nut to become famous.


Certainly some percentage of these shooters do it for the publicity, but
I have no idea what that percentage might ne. I doubt the "really crazy"
ones, though, have that as their motivator. They are in another world
entirely.
