I had the same NECO unit and one day it just quit and left us doing hard a
starboard circles in the fog.

I ended up removing the compass and the control unit and installed a Simrad
control unit slaved to the Neco motor. It has worked fine for three years
now. I did put in the Simrad rudder sensor unit also.
