Most schoolkids in Maryland head back to class tomorrow, the 21st of
August. Back in the days before electricity, when I was in public
school, we never went back to school until *after* Labor Day. When my
kids were in public school, they typically went back about a week before
Labor Day. Now it's two weeks before Labor Day? I'm surprised the kids
aren't up in arms about this.
The school year is still 180 days. These extra days on the front end
are offset by earlier dismissal in the spring and the additional days
off during the year.
There has been a lot of discussion about that here too.
I agree, when we were in school, it was the day after labor day until
the first week in June, depending on how many snow days we had.
We did not have as many days off during the year tho. (Unless you were
Jewish)
Here in the People Republic of Montgomery County Maryland they are so
screwed up it is unreal.
One year my kids didn't go to school for a full 5-day week until
January.
Every year Columbus day is on Monday when all of the people who work in
the federal government and for various companies that contract with the
government has off but, public school is in session. Later in the same
week the state teachers convention is held usually on Friday. Public
school is not in session but, all of the parents are working.
This year Columbus Day is October 8th and the State Teachers Convention
is on Friday October 19th. They may have figured out that people were
****ed about their boondoggle.
