Most schoolkids in Maryland head back to class tomorrow, the 21st of
August. Back in the days before electricity, when I was in public
school, we never went back to school until *after* Labor Day. When my
kids were in public school, they typically went back about a week before
Labor Day. Now it's two weeks before Labor Day? I'm surprised the kids
aren't up in arms about this.

The school year is still 180 days. These extra days on the front end
are offset by earlier dismissal in the spring and the additional days
off during the year.
There has been a lot of discussion about that here too.

I agree, when we were in school, it was the day after labor day until
the first week in June, depending on how many snow days we had.
We did not have as many days off during the year tho. (Unless you were
Jewish)

In New Haven, when I was growing up there, the public schools were
closed on the two high Jewish holidays if those days occurred on "school
days." We also didn't have school on Columbus Day. Our school year was
also a minimum of 180 days, but a few "snow days" were built into the
schedule. We had a lot of snow, but not very many snow days. We lived in
a hilly part of New Haven, and the sledding "venues" were everywhere.
