Dry??? I spent some time there in the middle seventies, and it sure wasn't
dry then. I hung out with a couple young lobster divers for a week or so,
and the goombay smashes practically killed me. We drank rum and cocoanut
milk, a good part of the time, or Kahlua and cream, just to try to protect
our stomachs.
Those guys would free-dive to a hundred feet, in water as clear as air. On a
completely calm day you could see the lobsters moving around on the bottom
without even using a water glass. And step over the side of the Whaler in
three feet of water, other places, and pick up conchs with your fingertips.
Barracuda were the problem then, as I'm sure they still are. They didn't
mention lionfish, and I don't recall seeing any. Not to say that they're not
a problem - I just don't recall them.
