Basically you need to jump out a window if you can to retreat.

Not in your state. I know a guy who did 7 years on Md for killing an
intruder in his home ... with his bare hands.
The state argued that if he had a chance to fight, he had a chance to
escape.

The laws here are not fixed in concrete.
