Airmar (see http://www.airmar.com/index1.html) makes many (maybe most)
of the transducers used on depth sounders and fishfinders from all the
popular brands on an OEM basis. I asked them exactly the same question
when we bought Fintry, but I had the advantage that I knew what the
old unit was. They can certainly answer your question, but only if you
know something about the transducer. Sounds like you don't know much.

I would guess, however that the answers a
Will it work? Probably not.
Will it damage the Lowrance? Probably not.
Can I test? Maybe. Get someone with the right equipment to measure
the transducer impedance of both at the Lowrance's frequency. If
they're similar, you stand a chance.

How about hanging the transom mount on with a clamp or something
similar until you next slip the boat?

I've an existing Lowrance X48 complete with transom mount transducer. I'd
prefer not to use the transom mount -it means another hole in the boat -
there are enough of those already. And I'm not going to slip the boat just
to change the transducer. I know from past experience that the signal
firing through the planking is virtually useless.
If I can find another plug for the Lowrance, can I use the existing
transducer? If it doesn't work, will I damage the Lowrance? Any way to
test for compatibility? My multimeter can measure capacitance, for what
that's worth.
