Say what? *That's never been done before in the US of A??
Think of it more as a memorial... *like your numerous Civil War sites,
your Pearl Harbour monuments.... the Ground Zero site *etc, etc.

All of which occurred on US soil and involved mostly US citizens.

Well, a person could argue that we didn't get thanks enough for
dedicating ourselves 'in service of our country'. Maybe it wasn't as
dramatic or dangerous *as military service but a lot of us did spend
the best part of our lives there. *Of course we were thanked from time
to time in departmental dinners, gatherings etc but my 25th year
celebration stands out... I still have the plaque and the portable
stereo we were presented with and then on my retirement dinner,
although I asked that they didn't make a fuss or strong arm
contributions from my fellow workers for a gift.
Judging by the cards and gifts they either liked me or were happy to
see me go. *;-)

all we 'working class heros' really wanted was a fair days pay for an
honest days work, a bit of respect on the job and an opportunity to
advance if we were inclined to better ourselves.

It's usually true that government workers receive at least a fair day's pay for an honest day's
work, respect on the job, and an opportunity to advance - if they are inclined to do the work.

Don, didn't you used to argue the fact that you were indeed a government
public servant?

He says it was a "Crown Corporation" and not the government. A Crown
Corporation is owned by the Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. They say it is
a not operated by the government but the government extends control over
budget and chairman and directors.

So, either he "served" as a government employee or he didn't! He above
claims 32 years of "government service", yet he used to complain when
someone said he was a government employee. Can't have it both ways!
