Say what? *That's never been done before in the US of A??
Think of it more as a memorial... *like your numerous Civil War sites,
your Pearl Harbour monuments.... the Ground Zero site *etc, etc.

All of which occurred on US soil and involved mostly US citizens.

Well, a person could argue that we didn't get thanks enough for
dedicating ourselves 'in service of our country'. Maybe it wasn't as
dramatic or dangerous as military service but a lot of us did spend
the best part of our lives there. Of course we were thanked from time
to time in departmental dinners, gatherings etc but my 25th year
celebration stands out... I still have the plaque and the portable
stereo we were presented with and then on my retirement dinner,
although I asked that they didn't make a fuss or strong arm
contributions from my fellow workers for a gift.
Judging by the cards and gifts they either liked me or were happy to
see me go. ;-)
So...thank you for thanking me.

What branch of the military did you serve in? Or was this a government
job you are talking about?
