say they don't want any automatic rain gauge data because they are not
particularly accurate.

I have a LaCrosse unit running the Heavy Weather package. It is not as
pretty as Wayne's software but it is free. It uploads to the web in
real time.

If you folks had saved some money when you were young, you could afford a decent rain gauge. This
one has lasted a long time, is quite accurate (mostly), and adds immeasurably to the decor:

As you can see, the recent snowfall yield was about 1/32d of an inch.
