Default Mea Culpa re Garmin Complaints

I just got back from our cruise near the cape (Boston, P-Town, Oak
Bluffs, Newport, Block and Mystic). I have to admit, those who
criticized my whining about Garmin were right on.

I unquestionably endorse the Garmin 182C. The first day out of Noank
(launching at Splicers and going around to Noank Village Boat Yard in
Pea soup fog) was almost easy with the unit and Blue Chart cartography.
Without it, I might still be out there.

It was an easy unit to tailor to our needs (tailoring the data on
pages). Easy to see in day light (did not rain once on our voyage).
Easy to plot courses ahead of time, adjust them on the fly and get
valuable data when other instrumentation broke down (e.g., Speedo).

I had complained about Garmin releasing the unit, updating their
software, then charging for the cable required to update the unit (and
also requiring a PC rather than a Mac). I had bought a power cord
without the computer port fitting.

Garmin sold me the required cord for the same price (allowing me to
return the cord I bought) and I borrowed a PC for the download. Piece
of cake

Like I said whining. Sorry if anyone paid attention to it and deferred
buying a great GPS unit based on my say so. No one who gets this unit
will be disappointed (unless they'd rather have the 2000 series with
the bigger screen and access for two chips).
