Hey dont knock square riggers!
I would prefer them in most weather, only disadvantage is crew numbers
and not getting as close to the wind.

If you ever get the chance have a look at captain Cooks map of New
Zealand.
Since the wind always comes from the west the east coast is mapped
almost exactly as today and the westcoast is a vague line.
