Actually, do your family computer guy a favor and skip this. If I
charges my relatives for this it would be cheaper for me to buy them a
new one, then join the party having fun. If the user has messed it up
with too much garbage, hit the recovery button after backing up your
data. Or buy a new one from Cosco for $499 that will probably be 10
times faster to start with.

If that is your recommendation why not just tell them to format their
C drive and reload the operating system from the start up disk.?

Same thing, but most HP, Acer and many others, if you hold down the
recovery key on boot, you go to a recovery partition that is much
faster. And how many regular users ever made the recovery DVDs?

If they are just starting from zero, why not do it for free?

I never charge relatives, but I don't get stuck putzing with the
computer when I came over for social activities. Maybe for 5 minutes,
but you could kill a whole evening reclaiming a 5 year old infested
computer. I don't do that for myself. (but I don't load crud and spyware)

What you pay for is transferring all of the stuff you have stored and
getting the machine configured the way you like it.

I make them sit down with me and I talk them through doing it for
themselves. After that, they are on their own. See, select folder,
send to DVD, right click burn exit done. (or USB). Backup complete.
