Default Flying Flags -- Properly

The former. I've seen the Canadian courtesy flag flown off the
starboard spreader--upside down--on American boats visiting my Toronto
club. The owners were oblivious.

Racers, being used to rules, are usually better than cruisers in this
respect, but even they aren't consistantly good.

I once saw a sailboat in Chesapeake Bay with a myriad of differemt
flags flying from starboard and port spreaders, arranged by size from
top to bottom, both halyards, from spreader to very near the deck.


My standing orders to the crew are "bear away" as boats like that are
probably heading for the breakers or a reef. G But they look even
prettier on their sides...
