google the story

If they killed all the hostages the answer is simple, sink the boat
and leave the survivors bobbing in the sea.

They're on a very nice sailboat owned by the dead hostage.

They no longer have need of it. The sailboat is a pirate ship now. Lob
a few 5" HE rounds into it from a couple miles away and come home.

If we really want to stop this crap we can.
Use aerial surveillance to profile the mother ships, monitor them from
over the horizon and when they start an attack, be there with air
power.. If you sink a few of these, the pirates may decide pirating is
not worth the risk.

Why don't we use Predators? Seems like it would be a lot for a the
buck. If they carry bombs, well, you know there aren't going to be too
many innocents involved.

That is what I was thinking and use a global hawk for the
surveillance.
One advantage of drones is we wouldn't have the problem of taking
prisoners. That seems pretty effective in Afghanistan. Just kill them
all and let god sort them out.

The idea of putting these guys in an American prison as some kind of
deterrent is ridiculous. If you are a Somali pirate, Pelican Bay is a
health spa. Did you see the smile on the face of the guy they took on
the Maersk Alabama while they were hauling him off to prison?
Maybe it is time we brought back "walking the plank" for these
pirates.

I have a feeling Pelican Bay might change is attitude.
