Last year, I went up a construction elevator about 450 feet over the
Sacramento River with some ironworkers who were building a new bridge. I
was scared into near speechlessness, which, for me, is plenty scared.
Got some great photos, though.
This is not a "union plug", but these guys are the toughest, hardest
working, SOB's I've ever met. I felt honored to be invited out for an
"end of job" bash. Anyone that doubts what these guys do on a
day-to-day basis should catch one of the many PBS broadcasts on
bridges and skyscrapers. I'd love to see a CEO walk an 8" beam 300
feet in the air!
