Parse his other statement. Is he inferring that he was a member of a
debate
team and that he actually debated?

His closing remark was just too weird to comment on.

He was the debate team manager. He carried the 3x5 cards for the members
of the team.

Likely, you are correct. I can't imagine him debating. After all, he's NEVER
shown us he's capable.
