Truth be told everyone is a racist at one level or another. I
believe it is a survival instinct left over from our cave dwelling
days, sort of a built in fear/distrust of anyone different. It's not
just a "white" thing either.

You're probably right, but that doesn't excuse racist behavior.
There's no survival instinct that requires people to open their mouth
and display it.
