Most coal has a goodly amount of hydrocarbons in it. It is highly
subject to spontaneous combustion. Power plants pack the piles with a
roller, to exclude air. Otherwise they catch fire. The smoke means
that the coal in that barge is on fire.

*Burning* it was a AEP Towboat and hell yes it was burning and I'm sure
they had water on it,,, I have experience with such things as Towboats and
marine transportation. I would have stopped the boat and dowsed the
flames....this guy could be on the nightly news on up the Ohio,

What they do is is pump the barge with water and let it smoke out, you
should see the coal bits when the pump them out..., like black sand along
the sandy banks of the lower Ohio,
