What's a "sea nettle?"
Stinging jelly fish doesn't quite cover it. Imagine something the size
of a large inverted soup bowl with tentacles about 3 feet long that
wrap around you and set you on fire everywhere they touch you.
... That sort of thing.
It certainly changes the way you water ski. You learn how to sit on
the gunnel of one boat, while the pull boat yanks you off. Then you
are real careful not to fall no matter what. To stop you either coast
up on the beach or ski up next to the other boat and roll in.
That was a $35 fine the last time I did it ;-)
Long time back we were on Snort Lauderdale beach and the storm brought
in a bunch of Portuguese Men 'O War. The tourists were splatting the
blue heads with rocks but didn't realize the tentacles stayed alive.
Lot's of folks got stung then we all realized to stay away from the
rocks sitting in the middle of the beach. Some of them got folks as far
as 10 feet away. That was the storm where we sat in my aunties condo and
watched a water spout come ashore up the beach.
Went water skiing in Long Island Sound a few years back and got a bunch
of Jelly fish stings, one got in my shorts, that really sucked... got me
in the nuts, I'll say it again, it rally sucked...
One time at one of the little beaches, a kid jumped off the boat with a
life
vest on, and one or more nettles ended up inside the vest. The thing was
stinging the hell out of the kid, who was screaming for all he was worth.
The
kid's dad didn't see what happened, and I was yelling at him to take the
vest
off the kid. The poor dad was a mess after listening to the kid scrreaming
and
me screaming, but he finally got the message. I had some Lanocaine, which
helped
a little, but the kid will probably be afraid to come back there again.
I'd say
he was about 7 years old.

Why were you screaming?
You should have helped remove the vest.. as it was clear the kids Dad didn't
realize what was happening.
Don, you know I hate it when you make yourself look stupid, little
buddy. There's a good chance that Herring wasn't close enough to do so.
