Some play is normal with the impeller off. *I had the same question
myself the first time I pulled one apart, took it to my local dealer
and the mechanic said don't worry about it.

Glas you clarified that, because I was wondering that myself. I was
getting ready to dig out my Mercruiser shop manual to find out.
