They really can't order him to resign but they can make it the most
attractive option.
Usually, in these situations, the guy actually wants the freedom to

This guy will write a book and do the talk show circuit, probably

that he was insubordinate and that was way off base. He knew this, but he
was so arrogant that it didn't matter. His reputation will be tarnished

This guy still has a lot of credibility. You don't get to where he was

It is clear he was very frustrated with the people in the White House.

So what. He should have followed the prescribed protocol and not complained

I have already been criticized about my guess that he will say Obama
wants to get out before the job was done. (disagreeing with the
timetable was what I said)
Fortunately that guess will be tested on Sunday I imagine so we will
know pretty quickly
