The driveshaft [yes driveshaft, complete with a U-joint] bolted
directly to the back of the crankshaft.

OK, I can understand that part, but I don't see how you could uses a
standard buick starter if the frywheel was on the front of the engine
because a buick (pad mount since 1963) has bolted to the engine block
at the back of the engine. Unless I'm really missing something here.
