My 23 yr old daughter called last night all excited cuz she says BP is
paying people $20/hr to help with the oil cleanup and her and her bf
are both wanting to do it. I did not have the heart to tell her it
was unlikely they'd be hired things are so screwed up over there.
With a BS in marine Bio she likes the salt marshes so that's a plus
but with skin that is so white she had melanoma at 17, I hope she does
not get it. She said that if you have a good boat thye will even pay
more and wanted to know if she could borrow my 20' Tolman Skiff. She
really is good at handling that boat. If BP would require their
personnel to wear a few clothes to minimize the UV risk, maybe.

Don't they have to wear hazmat suits or similar? That's what I see when
they're on TV on the beach collecting lumps.

There have been a handful of news reports indicating that a number of
BP spill cleanup workers are getting ill because of skin/air contact
with the oil and with the chemicals being used to try to mitigate it.
In addition to hazmat suits, breathing masks are also being
recommended. Considering what the temps are on the Gulf now that the
hot season is upon that area, well, wearing that gear must be miserable.

Also, why would a person with a b.s. in marine biology be scrounging
around for a crap job like oil spill cleanup, especially in Florida?
There are jobs aplenty in that state for marine biologists,
environmental engineers, et cetera, even summer jobs for those
pursuing master's degrees.

That's for sure.
Better those cleanup jobs go to pensioners who would love to be paid to
lounge on the Gulf beaches. Any footage I've seen, show those cleaning
guys operating in slow motion.
I could do that....wonder if they'd pay my way down?

I don't think you'd want the job...now, rounding up some pro-BP old
farts to get them to do the work...that would be a worthwhile venture.

The state of florida is hiring environmental engineering types...there
are weekly ads for such...I'd bet the qualifications might include
marine biology degrees. And I'll bet there will be a signficant number
of new openings created in the gulf area for those with the necessary
credentials.

Now that his business has gone to crap, our boy froggy could be hired as
either an anti-environmental engineer or as a lying spokesperson for BP.
