anyone used sea clear software? i used it years ago but just
rediscovered it...downloaded the NOAA charts...free and it's great!

havent figured it all out yet but it beats paying $20 for charts

I've never used it, but others I know have. It's supposed to be
fairly stable, but I understand that if you are using Vista or XP,
it's a bit buggy. Forget it if you are using Linux.

There is a new option which is much better than SeaClear in my
opinion. It is called OpenCPN, has a better user interface, more
features, and runs on just about any platform. Did I mention that it
is free?

The latest production version is 1.3.6, the Beta version of 2.1 is not
yet ready for prime time.

do you know how to select charts from the directory?

I thought you downloaded the raster charts already. Did you unzip them
and install them?

yep. got them in the 'active' directory. but there's no way to call
them up to see them. they reside in the active directory but there's
no command to actually see them

That was easy but I can't figure out how to hook a GPs
to the computer and get the software to talk to it. I have a Delorme
Earthmate and a couple of Garmin Nuvis. All of them have usb ports but
no serial port. The program is kind of useless without GPS

might need a serial/usb converter

Well I finally did that. After loading and unloading the driver and
changing settings every which way to Sunday, I finally got it to work by
downloading an updated driver from Belkin. I used the Garmin Emap with
the Belkin F5U409. Both units over 10 years old. I don't think the Nuvis
can output serial data so I won't bother to try anything with them.
