A good watch
A previous thread morphed into a discussion of watches. Since this is
a boating NG, a good watch should be nearly waterproof and in my case
seriously shockproof cuz I will wear it caving too. I used to wear
cheapo Casio digital watches until they started putting every weirdo
feature in em till you could no longer tell the time without
consulting the manual. My son also informed me that digitals are for
nerds which does not bother me much but my wife also said I ought to
get a good looking watch.
So, suggestions on an under $200 watch.
How about under $300?
My boss when I worked for a defense contractor in the 80s was a Marine
Corps Colonel with a PhD in physics who flew his own plane, a real
interesting guy. One day I went with him to a jewlery store in Sam
Diego so he could get his watch checked. The store owner offered to
buy his watch and offered "15" which my boss refused thinking it was
worth at least "18". After we left, I asked if his watch was a Rolex
and he replied that his watch was to a Rolex what a Rolex was to
Timex. What I had interpreted as $1500 and $1800 was actually $15000
and $18000. The watch was an Audeman-Piaget (or something like that)
and he wore it all the time. Although he was a short guy, I think he
could take care of himself if somebody tried to mug him.
