I have a2000Fourwinns230horizonand it has a 5.7L volvo penta
engine, with 280 hp. The boat seems a little sluggish, and i wanted to
know what could check for problems. I checked the compression in the
cylinders and that seemed to be fine. I wasnt sure if this boat would
be like a newer car where i could hook a scanner up to it and check
to see if everything is running correctly
thanks in advance

Is the engine reaching max allowable revs?

Is the bottom of the boat clean?

Just two other factors to check...

Very good. It seems that after hanging out here for 20 years, you did
pick up a few tidbits of information.

ok, so i have been doin some research on this problem and one boat
owner said there was a leak in the hoses between the pickup on the
bottom on the outdrive and where it goes into the pump on the engine.
He suggested that i close off the holes on the outdrive and put water
in from the hose that goes into the pump, to see if there are any
leaks. When i put water through the lines water was coming out of two
spots on the outdrive, and i was under the impression that there
should be no holes in the system between the outdrive and the engine.
Does anyone know if this should be a sealed system, and thus only
water should come out of the pickup holes on the outdrive?
THanks

If it was a sealed system it would have a radiator cap and would build
pressure and no impellor in the outdrive . I take it that the outdrive
is mercruiser?

I beleieve what you whave is a raw or fresh water system and the water
actually enters the outdrive and is pushed mechanically by a rubber
impellor to the engine water pump.

I'm not sure how that type of test would provide information on the
engines sluggishness.

Your'e compression seems good and I'm assuming that the engine seems
to run fine. You may need to check the ignition timing to see if it's
correct. If the timing isn't advanced correctly, it will cause a loss
of power. That's abotu all I know for the moment.

He said it was a Volvo Tim.
