National Review? That should tell you it is BS. Jean Chrétien was part
of ad-scam, theft of government moneys. So crooked many said he lied
out of both sides of his mouth in two languages at the same time. Paul
Martian can after, just wanted to make sure his Canada Steam Ships tax
loophole was kept open.
Government didn't cut spending, it raised taxes, GST was introduced in
1991 at 7%, a national VAT like tax. Yep, buy a $20K auto and write the
government a $1400 cheque over and above other taxes, local sales taxes
extra. Liberals promised to cancel it to get elected but decided they
loved the spending.
What the federal government did was jack the taxes and then make health
care a provincial responsibility, keeping the federal cash cow taxes
high. And the provinces jacked the taxes to compensate.
Result, working Canadians got tax screwed in both ears at once.
