On local tv news, on air talent said Canadians had already donated

Who would have thought? Americans would have to donate 1.5 billion
to
equal Canadian generosity.
I have to apologize to everyone. My inferiority complex is showing
again. I realize that the local TV news was wrong, and I see that
Americans have donated way more than Canadians. I guess it really is
true that Canadians suffer from a severe case of 'merican
inferiority'
when even the local TV compares our achievements to 'mericans.
We are a really sad country.
We have far less disposable income than Americans. Less room to give.
And we have dropped off food already, which is more important than
money
if your starving.
Give it 6 months and the gangs will rule again, the drug trade will
revive and business as usual. Because if we really cared about Haiti
they woul dhave had martial law and birth control 2 decades ago.
Yesterday I saw them handing out bags of rice (50 lbs would be my
guess) from a truck to folks on the ground. When a person on the
ground got a bag, there'd be a fight to take it away from him, and the
baddest guy would get the food. I'm sure he'd take it and try to sell
it.
Seems like they'd learn not to do it that way. Don't know who it was,
Americans or someone else. Really stupid though.

I agree. Someone should re-pack that rice in small baggies...maybe
enough
for a days rations in each.
This would only work if the truck was there everyday passing out the
small
rations.
NO the proper thing is to explain to the bad guy trying to take the food
and
resell it is, do not do that. Or I am going to have the local military
guy
shoot you dead.
There aren't any local military guys to do it. The ones that are armed
are gang members, to whom the rice is probably going anyway.
Yeah, doling out the rice a little at a time would take time. If
people brought their own containers, which don't seem to be in short
supply, the rice could easily be scooped into the container. Yeah, it
might not be the fastest way to distribute the food, but at least
women and children may get some of it.

Another option might be gigantic 'soup kitchens' where the rice etc is
cooked and the locals get to eat under supervision and protection.
The army should be very capable of this type of mass feedings.
