Obviously, there was never a volcano. *It was almost certainly just a
peat fire. *The boating interest is that the column of smoke was used
as a beacon by ships trying to find the St Marks River entrance. *In
the 1800s, one guy who tried to find it got as close as what is called
"Grey Mare Rock" in the shallows east of St Marks before the extremely
shallow water and low tides forced him to turn around but he did take
a bearing on it.
Winter is the only time a trek in those woods is reasonable.

How far up the st. marks river can you get a small boat? I remember
seeing it a few times during my motorized perambulations around the
Tallahassee area.

St Marks River goes underground at Natural Bridge for about 100
yards. This was the site of a civil war battle that saved Tallahassee
from destruction by the Feds. 200 14 yr old kids and a few old men
dug in and beat back about 1000 union troops. Of course, a cynic
might say the union troops had local guides whose sympathies were
uncertain.
Above Natural bridge, one can take a canoe as far as Horn Springs but
that is far east of Tallahassee.
