SPECIAL NOTICE

SUBJ: TERMINATION OF ALL U.S. LORAN-C SIGNALS

1. IAW THE 2010 DHS APPROPRIATIONS ACT, THE U.S. COAST GUARD WILL
TERMINATE THE TRANSMISSION OF ALL U.S. LORAN-C SIGNALS EFFECTIVE 2000Z
08 FEB 2010. AT THAT TIME, THE U.S. LORAN-C SIGNAL WILL BE UNUSABLE
AND PERMANENTLY DISCONTINUED.

THIS TERMINATION DOES NOT AFFECT U.S.
PARTICIPATION IN THE RUSSIAN-AMERICAN OR CANADIAN LORAN-C CHAINS. U.S.
PARTICIPATION IN THESE CHAINS WILL CONTINUE TEMPORARILY IN ACCORDANCE
WITH INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS.

I had wondered about that.

From http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/Loran/ , I gather the CG are keeping
these transmitters working:

Canadian East Coast GRI 5930 (Caribou ME, Nantucket MA)
Canadian West Coast GRI 5990 (Shoal Cove AK, George WA)

and

Russian American GRI 5980 (Attu AK)

The CCG already seem to have expressed their opinion that LORAN wasn't
necessary for safefy (with GPS/DGPS having better resolutions). I would
be surprised if they would pickup the tab to keep it running.

The question will be how long before they make an announcement.
