My boss at the time told me I was a great employee and one of the best
he'd ever hired, but he couldn't afford to keep me anymore - the choice
was take a six month leave of absence in a boot camp style rehab program
he knew about and if I made it, my job would be waiting when I got back.
If I didn't at least try - goodbye.

Owe that man my life.

Great boss, there's quite a few that wouldn't have bothered. He may have
forced the choice, but you made it, and stuck with it. I had two friends
that couldn't make that choice, one died of a burst esophagus, another
they found in a snowbank.

He was a good guy and had his own battle with demon rum when he was
younger so he understood it. The key was he knew it was up to me - I
had to take responsibility for myself. Changed my whole outlook on
life.

Some of us bottom out sooner than others, thank God. One of my
brothers is back into it again, but after years of walking his
tightrope with him, I'm going to let him do it himself this time.
Unless he asks for help, of course.

Sometimes you can't help and sometimes you shouldn't.

Tough choice.
