futon for v-berth?

On our previous boat we had a custom fitted HMC innerspring mattress and
loved it. but on our current sailboat (Dana 24) there is not enough leg
room
in the forward part of the v-berth to accommodate a 7" mattress. Therefore
was thinking that perhaps a 4" futon might be a better choices than the
foam mattress we currently have.
We used to sleep on a futon (while land dwellers). Mildew on the bottom was
a concern - they don't breathe nearly as well as a foam mattress.
A comfy futon often has a 1-2" foam core to add some bounce. You have to
flip them regularly and beat them with a stick (no, I'm not joking) every
few weeks to keep them comfy. I don't think they're the best choice for
boats due to the mildew.
You can get foam in lots of different densities that will suit you. Phone
up a local "foam shop" and ask for their best stuff.
