Sorry, Tom. I had to do a double-take on that one. :)
The whole genre started out as a fan-fic thing - fan fiction about TV
shows and/or movies. The homoerotic thing started, believe it or not,
on Usenet groups dedicated to these shows and all of a sudden took
off. This had to be somewhere about '95 when "Xena - Warrior
Princess" first aired - thereabouts anyway. The whole Xena/Gabrielle
character interaction sparked an interest in lesbian fan fic (there
was a purported lesbian undertone to the Xena/Gabrielle pairing -
Gabrielle who started off as a naive farm girl who turned into a
warrior and was inseperable from Xena) and the genre took off from
there. Sam Raimi was one of the producers of "Xena" and knowing just
how weird Raimi is, it wouldn't surprize me if he intended that to
happen.
Nothing wrong with that of course and some of this particular genre
are very good. There's a series of gay/lesbian historical novels ala
C.S. Forrester's Hornblower series (no double entendre or pun
intended) that is outstanding although the addition of sex into the
plot lines is a little offputting.
Hey - what ever floats your boat as it were. (That was intended - get
it - boat/float - rec.boats?)
