Vietnam may not have been communist, but Ho Chi Minh certainly was, but
he was also a pragmatist. He made deals with the Chinese Nationalists
(Chiang Kai Shek), and later with the French, to achieve Vietnamese
autonomy. Both parties screwed him over, and the rest is history. You
are right, we never should have backed French imperialism.

No doubt. We actually have posters here who are proud of their efforts to
kill Vietnamese, as if we had some divine right to do so. What we should
have done after WW II was help the Vietnamese throw off the yoke of French
imperialism.

We did not need to help them throw off the yoke. It was gone in 1945. But
Truman let France have back all their colonies.
