Iraq turned into the wild wild west after we showed up Bill.
Because of the brain surgeons at DoD and the White House, when the
400,000 man Army went home (and the police), they all took thier weapons.
There were ammo caches everywhere. The ASPs were left open and raided
daily - it was like a free day at the flea market with ali babbas (local
term for thieves) hauling off truckloads of sh*t. The very same sh*t that
is still killing Americans over there.
My camp was in Saddams garden just outside the backdoor of the palace in
Bagdad and AK fire was a nightly occurance. Whenever patrols checked
houses they'd check weapons and each was allowed 1 AK for protection.



Very true on the CF by the Pols and military, but the question was why did
Saddam still live, without gun control.

No one that could/would have tried to harm Saddam was allowed in the
forbidden city. Saddam, his sons, all thier cronies and the Republican Guard
were the only ones allowed.
Before the fall of the government the military and police had the weapons
and the civilians may have whatever had been stolen from Kuwait during that
invasion or picked up during the Iran/Iraq war.
And remember, we gave the Shiite the high hard one when we egged them into
an uprising against Saddam after the Gulf War and then left them hanging
with no support. So they weren't real interested in doing ol Uncle Sams
bidding.
