number 50es72c it seems to be locked in gear the cable works the
throttle freely but as i try to get it out of gear nothing happens i
cannot turn the prop freely it is in gear foward or reverse i dont
know? when i force the prop to turn it is under compresson load, it
seems somthing has come a drift from between the head a the gear box.
Does anyone have an idea of what this could be and how i can fix it ?
I have a 1969 85hp electric shift Evinrude that may be similar to your
motor in operation. The electric shifts are designed to be in forward
gear with no electric power. That allows for get home ability. Maybe you
are simply in forward gear because there is no power connected.
If you are lucky the problem is power not getting to the shift pucks in
the lower end. Trace the wiring for discontinuity. If you find a break
repair it and off you go.
There are two shift pucks in the lower end - one shifts out of forward to
get neutral and one shifts farther yet to get reverse. A forward puck is
not needed because the spring holds it in forward gear with no power.
These pucks are fairly simple to replace but you have to find a new one
or gamble by buying a used one. About 10 years ago I found a site on the
internet that sold me new manuals for my 1969 motor - the tech manual was
great. Try googling for manuals.
