nice summary!
I paid full working dues to my union for 25 years. I was always happy to
write the check each quarter.
I never felt more like a statistic when I worked in the union when I
was young. I was nothing more than a drone, as were the others.
Having had some encounters with the Soviet Bloc when in my life time,
I have appreciated the fact that working under union duress was a
microcosmic experience of communism.

and i never felt more like a drone watching plant closings, lay offs
of engineers, etc, with no union protection at all, courtesy of
'management watching out for stockholders' when they were really
protecting themselves.
How can a union stop a plant closing? I can see how they can cause a
plant closing.
