By doing so, he gives the Republican governor the chance to name a
Republican successor. I think Florida law allows the governor, Charlie
Crist, to name himself. Crist is the leading GOP contender for the
Martinez seat...

Martinez himself had a somewhat checkered term as senator. :)

Jeb Bush would seem a logical choice.
