Agreed crime is crime , should do time etc, but Madoff's fraud was so
transparent , you have to ask if there was any effort that could have
saved the victims from themselves....

I can't agree with that. It should have been transparent to the
regulators but I expect his victims just thought he had abundant
insider connections.

For example, Senators routinely average 20% annual returns on their
investments.
